Will dutifully flew home for the break. He got past Christmas okay, but he and his father began fighting before New Year’s. William Darcy Senior used all of his old arguments of ‘family’ and ‘commitments’ and ‘keeping the business ours.’ Will argued that finance, economics, and hedge funds weren’t what he wanted, but architecture was. His father threatened him with taking away his trust fund money—a frequent threat. They fought about Will’s future, his major, his choice of college, his decision to switch universities, and his leaving the east coast entirely. His father had not understood Will’s need to move to look after Giana.

Will took to reaching out to friends to get away from his father and then realized that most of them, being children of the idle rich (like Will), didn’t have to work or study or do anything between school semesters. Most of his friends had gone away to warmer locations, but there were a few to hang out with in New York. Their interactions involved clubs or bars or catching the latest Broadway productions.

Christopher (whose father was a bond trader) invited a group to his house in the Hamptons for a week. Zara, an old hookup of Will’s, was one of those who was also invited. Will thought that such a woman ought to be considered a friend, right? They had shared something once before. But another night together for old time’s sake was unappetizing. He realized that there had been friendship and a connection with Lizzie even if they had started as a hookup. They were friends despite her denials the night of the banquet—or had been.

Giana was ecstatic to be back home. She and Fritzi spent a great deal of time shopping. Gia’s languor fell away once she got back to the east coast. Her persistent worries about her TA had been dragging her down, and she blossomed being back in New York.

Will talked to his Uncle Earl who ran the Family Office. There was nothing William Darcy Senior could do about his money, despite the threats. While Will wasn’t allowed to cash out his trust fund money and spend it, it was his money even if his father argued that he could take it away. Uncle Earl and Cousin Fritzi ran the investments for the Family Office and managed everyone’s trust fund. Everyone but Aunt Kate’s who had moved her money out when she married (which was such a sign of disloyalty).

A few people in New York claimed to have seen Kate recently, but she had made some enemies when she had left New York society behind. Most didn’t return her phone calls. But when Will got back from his trip to the Hamptons, and his Aunt Kate phoned, he took the call.

Lottie came by one Sunday and proposed that they go hiking. Lizzie immediately thought of Will and suggested a walk around the block (Longbourn Way was an extra-long street), her studies were given as an excuse. Lot didn’t have school to worry about, just then, but was working full time to refill her bank account.
